Where Fresnans Cool Off On Triple-Digit Days | Families
A few usually popular Fresno summer destinations were deserted Saturday due to the heat. As for Fresno's only water park, it was packed.
Just after noon more than 45–hundred people had invaded Island Water Park in northwest Fresno. Ashley Saaty is tired of the triple digits. "It's how some locals beat the heat. I think it's ridiculous. I think for everybody that lives down here they should all get away to someplace like this."
Young and old were cooling off on the slides, in the pools and riding rafts. Hunter Mikus spent her afternoon on a raft. "I think the lazy river really helps with it cause you get to cool off a lot."
Island Water Park comfortably holds 6–thousand people. It's a place where Pleshette Fitzgerald likes to hang out on a hot day. "No I don't feel it cause I'm wet. When you're in the water you don't feel the heat. It's the best way to beat it."
In other parts of town there were no crowds to speak of. This family having a picnic had a large area of Roeding Park to themselves.
At nearby Playland many of the rides weren't operating due to the heat. Abbey Ellis knows why. "Some of the rides are closed. And if you go on any ride and if there's any metal and you touch it you probably burn yourself."
Abbey's mom Sara says she brought her family early but things didn't turn out the way they planned. "By the time we got over here the water was already hot and it's been kind of miserable."
The merry go round was shady and the horses were comfortable to ride on. But on a triple-digit day like Saturday there weren't many takers.
