Murder Investigation; Fresno Man Wanted

Murder Investigation; Fresno Man Wanted

A Fresno man first wanted for questioning in the disappearance of a Sanger teenager is now wanted for murder, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Monday afternoon.

An arrest warrant for murder, attempted murder and weapons charges has been issued for 21-year-old Ernie Chanmany.

Chanmany was initially identified as one of the suspects possibly involved in the disappearance of 16-year-old Sammy Mercado.

Detectives say Mercado and two friends drove to a field at Annadale and Willow in Southeast Fresno on April 12th to steal marijuana. Mercado was confronted by two men on the property as his two friends drove away. They reportedly heard gunshots.

The two friends last saw Mercado lying on the ground next to the marijuana. Investigators say the two returned later to try to find Mercado but could not.

The sheriff's office has not released any other details regarding Sammy Mercado.

Tourney Fate Awaits, Fresno St. Softball Loses in WAC Final

The Fresno State softball team saw its run at the WAC Tournament come to an end Saturday with a 8-3 loss to BYU in the championship round at the NM State Softball Complex.

The Bulldogs (36-23) will now await their fate to see if they receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Fresno State is the only school that has made all 30 NCAA Tournaments and the `Dogs will learn if their streak continues when the NCAA field is announced on Sunday night (7 p.m. PT - ESPNU).

"You never want to leave it in the hands of the [NCAA] committee because there are too many intangibles they don't know about," head coach Margie Wright said about not getting the WAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. "I think we did ourselves a lot of good and we got a lot of bonus points with [Friday's win over] Hawai'i.

"I think when you've been in the tournament 30-straight years, you need to be given strong consideration."

Leave Canned Food at Your Mailbox Today

Today, Saturday, May 12, 2012, the National Association of Letter Carriers will pick up canned and dried foods for Stamp Out Hunger across America. Now in its 20th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive.

In recent years, a record-setting total of 77 million pounds of food was donated, bringing the grand total of donations to more than one billion pounds collected over the history of the drive.

To help Stamp Out Hunger, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable food items next to your mailbox before regular mail delivery today, Saturday, May 12th. The nation’s 230,000 letter carriers will then collect the donations as they deliver the mail and take them to food banks and other hunger relief organizations in more than 10,000 local communities.
